The agentic enterprise: when your software stops waiting for you

The 2020s SaaS pattern was a dashboard for every problem. The next pattern is an agent for every workflow.

The defining shape of enterprise software for fifteen years was the dashboard. See your data, spot the problem, then go do something about it in another tab. Software surfaced; humans acted. We got very good at building beautiful surfaces — and quietly accepted that the doing was still ours.

The agentic shift breaks that contract. The new unit of software isn’t a view; it’s a delegate. You don’t open it to look; you hand it a job. The difference between a tool you operate and a colleague you delegate to is the largest change in enterprise software since the move to the cloud — and most organizations haven’t felt it yet.

From tools to colleagues

This reframes the buying question. For a decade the question was “what does this show me?” The agentic question is “what will this do, and what will it never do without asking?” Software starts being evaluated the way you’d evaluate a hire: what can it own, how good is its judgment, and does it know when to escalate.

You don’t open an agent to look at it. You hand it a job.

Regulated industries feel it hardest, and last

The catch is that delegation requires trust, and trust requires accountability — which is why regulated industries will adopt this last and be transformed most. In insurance, healthcare, and finance, an agent can’t just act; every action has to be attributable and reversible, with a human at the decision point. That’s a harder system to build, and a far more valuable one, because it’s the only version of agentic AI that’s survivable where the stakes are real.

The agentic enterprise isn’t software that runs without people. It’s software that finally does the work and leaves the judgment where it belongs. The companies that internalize that — and design the human decision in, rather than trying to engineer it out — will define the next era of how work gets done.
